He was crying, T. Almost hysterical. Can't you just draw blood at home and take it back? He's calmer in his own bed. I couldn't... I just couldn't do that to him.
You're being an asshole. You are under-miming me at my work place Blaine! I don't come in to your classroom and start teaching a different way, but whatever you do what you want. I'll do the blood work at home. Just clean his cuts and use hydrogen peroxide. I'll be home later to do the rest.
[Blaine crossed his arms.] Thanks so much, T. I appreciate the name calling. He was crying! He begged me to take him home! If one of the kids in my class did that, feel free to leave with them!
[He slammed his phone off, tossing it on the table and went upstairs to sit with Jake, parenting was harder than he had expected.]
A couple of hours later, Tanner came home from work, and slammed the front door shut, he knew he was being a little over the top with Blaine, but he was pissed. He was scared that his son was hurt and wanted to make sure he was ok and get him treated as fast as possible. He hung up his keys on the rack and took off his coat. He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, ignoring Blaine, and headed up to Jake's room, where he could hear the video game noises.
"Hey champ." He smiled softly at him, sat down and grabbed the extra controller and started playing with him.
"Hey Dad," Jake said, smiling back, wary, then nuzzling up close. "You can be Mario if you want, I'll be Luigi. You're good at the jumps."
Blaine sighed, following Tanner up a few paces behind, listening in the hallway to them play. He hovered for a moment, knowing he was too mad to talk to him now and not wanting to fight in front of Jake, so he went back downstairs to make them lunch.
"Hey buddy." Tanner smiled widely and wrapped an arm around him in a tight hug, letting him nuzzle. "Sure, I'll be Mario if you want, even though i think you are way better at the jumps than I am." He laughed, poking his side. "How you feeling? Is your arm still hurting?" He asked casually, but he was looking for any indications or signs, in his movements or in his answer.
Tanner had felt Blaine follow him up the stairs and was waiting for him to show his head, he was going to apologize...eventually, but right now he was still pissed. He sighed though when he heard Blaine head downstairs again. He must be really pissed as wel, if he can't even mask the anger in front of Jake, like they usually do. Tanner was probably in the doghouse....well crap.
"Well, yeah, it still twinges a little. Or a lot. But not all the time. Just some of the time," Jake answered, looking up at his Dad. "You aren't mad at me for leaving, right? I didn't want to get a shot. Daddy said it was okay..."
Blaine brought back a snack for the two of them. "Hey... you guys are probably hungry," he ventured, putting it on the table beside Jake's bed, hoping it would help a little. He didn't want to have a fractured family like he'd grown up in.
“No buddy, I am not mad at you at all. I know it can be scary and there were lots of things going on, and I know I probably wasn’t being as comforting as I could, and I’m sorry for that, I was just worried about you, and wanted to know exactly what was going on. I wish you had stayed though buddy, you know I would never let anyone do anything to hurt you, and I do still need to give you the shot, but I promise it won’t hurt. I’ll do it myself for you.” He says hoping the reaction wasn’t going to be bad.
Tanner stiffened slightly, he was still irritated, but he was trying to get over it, but it was still so fresh, so he nodded and let out a weak “Thanks, as he stared at the video game screen.” They would be fine, probably in a couple of hours at most, family was very important to him.
"NO! No shots!" Jake shouted, throwing down his controller and running over to Blaine.
Blaine looked helplessly at Tanner. How was he supposed to say the right thing stuck between his husband and his son? "I... Jake... if you need the shot, you have to have it," he tried wearily.
“Jake…” Tanner said tiredly. “I promise it won’t hurt, have I ever hurt you before…” He says looking at him, but staying where he was not to freak out his son anymore. He looked up to Blaine for a little more help, with a look that clearly said ‘be a father, not a pushover.’
Blaine scowled at him over Jake's head, holding the boy close. Fine, whatever. Tanner could think whatever he wanted of him. Clearly a truce was going to be a long time coming. "Jake, you know that your father would never hurt you, he only wants what is best for you. He loves you, and I love you. Why don't you just sit on my lap when he does what he needs to do as your doctor, then you can go back to playing your game. I promise it will be quick." He glared at his husband, 'you happy now?' written on his unhappy face.
'That's better...' Tanner huffed to himself as Jake whined out a long 'Nooooooo' still clinging to Blaine. So they had tried comfort and that didn't work, next thing...bribery. "We'll let you have your ice cream before your dinner..." he says, it was either that or double the scoops, but that would be a very hyper Jakers before bedtime.
"Yeah buddy, and you can even have chocolate syrup on it too." he said giving him a warm smile. "Doesn't hurt at all does it Dad?" He said looking up at Blaine with a little smile, and hopefully in conveyed a little apology in there.
Blaine sighed. "It's only a pinch. And it's over before you know it. You can pinch your Dad all you want afterwards too. Show him how it felt." He smiled at him a little, willing to make a truce.
Jake looked miserable, but he seemed to realize he had lost this fight. "Yeah, fine, whatever," he said sullenly, sitting back down on the bed, looking balefully at Blaine like he had betrayed him.
Blaine sighed. "We should always do what the doctor says, I'm sorry Jake."
"Not when the doctor is Dad, he always listens to you and does what you tell him." he pouted folding his arms over his chest, in a scared fashion.
"Hey you're making me sound like a dog." Tanner laughed, pausing to give Blaine a quick kiss, that filled with a lot of apologies and went to get his medical kit. He came back sat next to Jake and wiped his arm with the antibacterial wipe. Jake had his eyes sqeezed shut. Tanner felt bad, kids hated it. "I'm going to pinch your arm lightly a few times and then it will happen ok?" He says pinching it twice in different places, administering the shot quickly, and then pinched a few more times. Jake hadn't felt the shot and was expecting it after the pinches. When the pinches stopped he tensed, he felt his Dad moving off the bed, probably to get a better angle to tab him, but there was nothing. He cracked an eye open and looked over at him. "Did you do it already?" he asked.
Tanner nodded. "Sure did Kiddo. Pick your band aid." He says holding out a variety with a bunch of different cartoons on it. "Told you you wouldn't feel a thing."
Jake pointed to Spongebob, grinning up at both of them as if there hadn't been a series of dramatic tears and tantrums all morning. "Yeah, it wasn't that bad at all!"
Blaine rolled his eyes, then hugged both of them. "I have a crazy family."
